Staying in Love with Him

Posted on Updated on

For instance you’re a guy, what will you do if you met a girl who seems interesting to you? What will be your primary step in getting to know her more deeply? Hmmm… You might want to spend more time with her just to know her interests, right? If you then, became friends, you would never hesitate to share each other’s burdens, happiness and even secrets that you might never told anyone before. As the time goes by, you would never noticed that the relationship you both created was already deepened because of these simple things you’ve made… Conversation… Communication… Connection… Before you knew it, you’ve already found yourselves in love with each other.

When we are in love, we usually excited to know them more and the things that would make them smile. We even want to spend more time with them. In the same way, I believe that a person who is so in love with Jesus, spends quality time in reading His word and respond in prayer. He would love to know the things that would make Jesus smile. He will spend quality time finding what God’s likes and dislikes are through reading His word (the Bible) and will spend time to talk to Jesus every now and then through prayer. When the closeness between God and a man has been established, this person who is so in love with Jesus would never get shy to ask God to help him in a certain situation where he can’t manage to do it alone because he confidently knew that his faithful best Friend will never leave him nor forsake him. He will trust God even in the hardest, painful and impossible situation because the trust and love has already been established through constant communication (Isaiah 26:3).

Reading the bible and prayer go hand in hand if we really want to have real relationship with God. We will not be able to understand His word without asking God to give us wisdom through prayer and we will not be able to pray and receive His blessings if we do not have any idea about His promises written in the bible. Meditating God’s word is a place where we can find peace. All of the negative things that the world brings can really discourage us but the only thing that will give us peace are the promises that God Himself reveals through His word (John 14:27). It serves as our weapon to conquer our fears, doubts, worries and even lies of Satan. Jesus Himself, was being tempted by the lies of Satan when He was at the desert for 40 days but He rebuked it through quoting God’s word that has been stored in His heart. As we read the entire story, Satan left because Jesus set His authority over Satan. We too, can set authority over our fears, doubts and worries if we will just store God’s Word in our hearts (Matthew 4:1-11).

If the Bible is the way for us to know the heart of God, in the same way, Prayer is the way for us to communicate and to present ourselves to God. Philip Yancey, describe prayer in one of his books as “a place where we can present ourselves honest before God; it is the time where we can bring who we really are; it is the way for us to reconnect ourselves to God”. There’s no step-by-step procedure that we need to follow when we pray. Jesus said, we don’t need to babble words when we pray if we’re not praying from the heart. We don’t need to say it out loud just to let others know that we are praying. God already knows our thoughts before we utter the words (Matthew 6:7-8). He just wants us to be open and be honest enough to say what’s inside our hearts because He cares. He cares in every little thing of our lives. He cares to what we really feel even the most tiny little fear and the deepest hurts that we keep on hiding. He also cares every joy and happiness we feel. He wants to be part of all these things. He needs us to do our part to make it possible by sharing our lives with Him in prayer. He doesn’t care about all our good works, going to church every Sunday or joining the ministries if we do not dedicate our hearts in prayer before doing these things. He wants to build an intimate relationship with us because He loves us. He would love to hear our hearts everyday.

Before the darkest hour came in the life of Jesus to bring salvation to mankind, He spent hours in prayer to the Heavenly Father. We can see that he poured out his honest feelings to the Father and he asked God if there’s any other way to take this cup of sorrow away from him. Jesus grieve deeply to the point of kneeling down while praying that even His sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground (Luke 22:42-44). He did not pretend what He really feels at that time because He knows that the God of the universe, the only One who can save him from death, is listening. But instead of forcing God to do what he wants, he chose to obey the Father even in the most painful situation of His life (Mark 14:36). He did not let his emotions control him because he knows that the purpose and plan of God was perfect and good. In the end, he was being rewarded as our greatest High Priest because of His reverent submission to God. “During the days of Jesus’ life on earth he offered up prayers and petitions with loud cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. Although He was a son, he learned obedience from what he suffered and once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him.” (Hebrews 5:7-9).

Jesus is the ultimate good example for us to learn how to pray. We need to pray because Jesus, Himself did. If we will just give ourselves time to pray, we will also have the strength to do the things that can change people lives (including ourselves), and the temptations will flee from us. Jesus came on earth to make a way for us to the Father (John 14:6). Because of Him, we can freely come to the Father and ask anything in prayer in the name of Jesus. If we will just believe and pray according to His will, it will be given to us (John 14:13-14, James 1:6). Prayer is the key for us to be more closer to God. It is the safest place where we can honestly pour out our true emotions without the feeling of rejection.

If you think that your first love with God had dried up, first and foremost, check your communication with God, “Has it been well-taken cared of?”. When two lovers are in love with each other, they always find ways to communicate regardless of the distance. God has always been near. He is just waiting for us to come and have fellowship with Him. Let’s do our part. Let’s make sure that our commitment with the Lord is well taken cared of and surely we will find true joy of being in love with Him.

When was the last time you had a very intimate talk with God? You can do it now and enjoy your time in prayer.
